CASHING OUT
I think it was two weeks ago I bought a few rimfires. On sale at a not so unreasonably priced ranch store for ten bucks after tax for a whopping 300 rounds. Whoop-de-motherhumping-doo. I was so thrilled I almost felt my nipples harden. Every writer outside New York City or other liberal enclaves has tackled the subject of ammo prices and come away unable to explain their persistence. As I’ve already said, my final answer is diminishing ore supplies, with, perhaps, just for awe-shucks-and-grins, a dose of rising nitrate prices thrown in. It isn’t the election, as Super Nobel Obammy has not messed about with guns at all. He’s screwed with everything else, but perhaps instinctively he realizes that if the white cracker redneck hillbillies have left his half breed ass alive till now, they wouldn’t wait two seconds to all jump into the General Lee (
MPC 1969 General Lee Dodge Charger Model Kit
) and lynch his sorry hide if he tried to outlaw their guns. I’m sure that the powers that be have also instructed him to try to refrain himself since food is the weapon of choice against the proletariat masses and the wood rats with shotguns and SKS’s (
TAPCO SKS 20rd Detach Mag, Black
) can only hurt themselves in any rebellion ( the tanks might stay away, but so will the semi’s carrying groceries and the militias can kill each other for stew meat ). It isn’t the war in Iraq if that has downgraded into a police action. My vote is resource shortages. Your vote may vary, as you are convinced an act of will alone will take you to your Happy Place of Never Ending Material Wealth ).

I started the “The Fall of Eden” (
The Fall of Eden
) book last night. I’m two thirds of the way through and am rather impressed with it. In essence, as soon as news of a nuclear attack reaches vacationers in the Caribbean, they take swift steps to steal what supplies they need and plan on fighting for more. Yes, all the middle class angst associated with stealing yourself rather than having a fictitious legitimized entity do it for you is played out in detail, but at least this is a more realistic portrayal than most authors give ( they either have the character stockpiled with a million bucks worth of crap or everyone dies and leaves the treasure littered about ). It might not be the longest, or best written, but I’m beginning to enjoy this new trend in the genre where far more attention is paid to the asshatness of people. Let’s bury the cartoon characters from the eighties pulp survivalist fiction and never see them again. I’ll let you know the final verdict soon, when I’m completely down, but right now this one is neck to neck with “The Unit”. One of the better ones, although not an all-time great.

As usual, a slightly warmed pile of leftovers for today’s article ( well, a pile of something ). I know I’ve broached this idea before, but I don’t think I’ve made it the official subject matter for an article. Selling your overpriced semi-auto (
The Gun Digest Book Of Semi-Auto Pistols
) to finance all your other prep items. This is what I did moving from Florida seven years ago. Well, I also maxed out a few credit cards ( later bankrupted on, with great relish, as I get to screw the bankers before they screw me ) and the sale was just for general moving expenses. But by moving I got a great casino job ( the job sucked, management sucked, the tips were great ) which gave me enough surplus to buy cash on the barrel head land, guns, silver, gold, vehicles, trailers, ammunition and solar panels (
Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit
). It all really worked out great for me. Of course, that was the end of management jobs for me then, as I had my escape all paid for. It was the first time in my life I was really smart about a paycheck, investing rather than renting or consuming. I still do so of course, investing, but it is all just playing around. The serious stuff is taken care of. But I had also traded in for a much better model of wife, one that didn’t think my money was hers. Well, okay, #3 was like that, but she was too fat. But my point was that the whole trend, while unplanned, started with raising money by selling the money pit semi’s.

You might have to sell more than one. I know that is like driving a stake through your heart, then pouring molten lava into the wound, then ripping off your testicles to plug the hole. You love your semi’s. They represent all that is good and just. They are your Superman cape. Well, I got some bad news for you, an AR-15 ain’t going to put a roof over your head for more than another two months. And a Beretta ain’t going to find you a job. An HK-91 (
Leapers Low Profile Rail Scope Mount For Hk-91 H&k G3 GSG-5 MP5 SP89 Hk-91 93 94 & Cetme Rifles
), even if it is the premier survival battle rifle ( as far as reliability and longevity ), ain’t going to feed you during a famine ( unless you like diseased long pork fed on corn syrup ). But, if you act now, today’s one time offer is a full prep package for the price of your prized carbine. If you sold your overpriced boy toys and cleared fifteen hundred ( throwing in the ammo and mags, and making it a paperless transaction if legal, you can get full retail if nor a smidge more ), you would have all the bells and whistles needed to survive the economic collapse and a year or two of famine (
Famine: A Short History
). Not a bad trade, if you ask me. Wheat is $150 per years worth in buckets. You can rearm with a Ruskie bolt for two hundred which includes a tin of ammo. Under $50 for a wheat grinder and fifty for a ceramic water filter ( which can be replaced with unglazed flower pots without the drain hole ). If you look real close on E-Bay under real estate, you should be able to find junk land around $500.
*
Take the surplus to move and pitch a tent (
Coleman SunDome 7-Foot by 7-Foot 3-Person Dome Tent (Orange/Gray)
) on the land. A few hundred more buys the lumber to roof over your pit. Or, don’t bother moving because you can’t live like that. But it will all be paid for and available after that point where everyone realizes the economic depression is just going to get worse. Then, all of the above can’t be had for love or money. But you will already have it. Then, rather than the wife gazing at the poolboy with undisguised lust, she will look at you as the savior and provider. The lust part might not be there but at least she’ll give it up to keep you. No extra out of pocket expense for a security blanket. Just your ability to get past your misinformed and misplaced priorities. You hate me now for spreading the truth and gospel but soon you will feel bad for having doubted me.

James,
Perhaps you could afford us a profile of yourself some twenty years ago in contrast with the Bison of today.
I don't think it's necessarily declining ore supplies, but rather that China has a semi-working economy, and they are sucking up all the resources they can get to feed it. After all, most U.S. citizens are more concerned about the latest iPhone App they can download, rather than Prepping.
22 rimfire
High velocity
advantages ......
cheap 300 rounds for $10
disadvantages .......
--less accurate than subsonic
--can be heard a long way
(After SHTF would human predators hear the shots, stalk and kill you
and take your woman and supplies?
Naaaaaah. Can't happen to you.)
Subsonic
advantages ....
--more accurate
--very quiet from a 22" or longer barrel.
--easily suppressed after SHTF.
Youtube has several videos on making pop bottle suppressors.
NOTA BENE DO NOT make illegal suppressors before TEOTWAWKI..
If you get caught you'll go to prison.
This is your ass now .
This is your ass in prison O
disadvantages...
cost ........
box of 50 $3.17 + 1.0825 Texas tax $3.43
about $35 for a brick of 500
NOTE Almost all 22 rimfire rifles have 1:16 twist barrel and shoot good groups with 40 gr subsonic, but poor groups with Aguila SSS 60 gr which requires 1:9 twist.
Marlin mod 25 Remington subsonic 3/4" group at 50 yards.
10/22 with E Arthur Brown 1:9 barrel 3/8" group at 50 yards.
Hey James,
New Peak Oil article you'll want to check out http://petrole.blog.lemonade.fr/2010/09/16/interview-with-robert-l-hirsch-12/
Hope I wrote that right. There are 2 parts.
Idaho Homesteader
I keep waiting for the day when the people wake up en mass. You will not be able to find storable food for love or money. Remember just a few years ago when people got nervouse and you couldn't buy more than one bag of rice at a time at Costco.
Ya know your going to need it, why not buy now for pennies on the dollar. Then you can sit and laugh at the starving multitudes who were too late.
Idaho Homesteader
Vlad,
I recently started buying subsonic 22 as opposed to the brick of 500.
Had a raccoon problem. Short version--no more raccoon problem.
It didn't even wake the neighbors.
Idaho Homesteader.
If I was really back up against the wall, yeah, I'd sell an AR to get a .22 rifle and a bunch of ammo.
But I swear before I'd sell any gun I'd offer my erotic services at the bus stop before selling off a life-saving tool.
But when it's run for your life time, then you have to get it down to what you can carry on your back, and then a bit more in a bicycle trailer. For me it'd be a .22 pistol and a brick of ammo and bury the other goodies if I have time.
Listen to Vlad on ammo, that Remington "Subsonic" is a good load. I think it's their old green/blue box "Target" with a hollow point slug loaded. Good stuff. Big-5 has it out where I am and it's possum-proven.
Damn - wanted to say, M.D. Creekmore seems to have been "disappeared". Site's down, Aaaaaaand He'sGone.
Scary.
Remington Subsonic 36 gr. ammo .......ISN'T ALWAYS SUBSONIC!!!
Depends on the barrel length and how much powder is in them. I have had better experience with the CCI copper washed 40 gr. subsonic, they are designed to come apart easily for a better wound channel, and they are $6.35 / 50 rounds.
The Aguila isn't the most stable as Vlad pegged it, takes a 1:9 twist or faster barrel. It would be cool to set up a .22 rifle with a fast twist bull barrel and a night vision scope.....Ahhhh Dreams..... But on to prepping news.
50# of Oatmeal at the feed store is $8.45 and will feed a person for more than 30 days. I'm going to the feed store tomorrow and will nitrogen pack some for long term storage of better-than-nothing food. There is a guest article about nitrogen packing on the cheap and how to make your own oxygen absorbers on the cheap too.
Still looking for Like minded individuals around KC and east of there.
